On a Dark Night

On a Dark Night

“Lilla writes with sensitivity and delicacy and humor, but I feel that something grander and more spiritual is happening on the page as well. It reminds me of Daphne du Maurier, the way she writes about the landscape and country life, and the way she characterises the individuals with a gothic feel - there is mystery in the trees and the wind and the old nooks and crannies, the hidden drawers.”

Our Story

Our Story

In the late 1970s Lilla Pennant interviewed the residents of a rural Welsh community that had intrigued her as a child. In her search to understand why so many cottages were abandoned, she uncovered more than she expected, including the answer to a question from her past: the source of the strange noises outside her home on dark and windy nights.

The stories that emerged from these interviews were woven into a manuscript that was stowed away for decades. In 2016 My Hengi Books began work with Lilla Pennant to bring out On a Dark Night with Enough Wind, including illustrations by Meyriel Edge and Paul Lloyd, which evoke the beauty and mystery of this part of Wales.
